 Information for prospective parents/carers

We warmly welcome visits from prospective families.

Please ring and speak to Mrs Jo Sykes in the school office on 01225 782388 to arrange a convenient time to visit and meet us. As a Voluntary Controlled (VC) school in Wiltshire, the Local Authority (Wiltshire Council) is the admitting authority which can offer a place at Staverton CE Primary School. The Headteacher and staff are always happy to show families around our school but the official offer of a place remains with the Council.

Every local authority maintained school has a pupil admission number (PAN) which sets a limit to how many children the school is obliged to admit into its reception class each year. It is often used a broad indicator of year group size for other year groups. Currently at Staverton our PAN is 45. The PAN is calculated by the local authority using a formula which takes into account the floor area and number of classrooms.

We follow the Wiltshire admissions process and the application process and it is now underway for September 2024. All parents who live in Wiltshire will need to complete a common application form to apply for their child to attend a primary or secondary school.  This form must be returned to Wiltshire Council.  Parents are able to apply online through the link below in which case a paper copy is not required.

For children with an Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP)

If your child has an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) you need to contact your child’s SEND lead worker who will contact the school to discuss admission. You can contact the Central SEND Services at Wiltshire Council on 01225 718095.

The deadline for secondary school applications is 31st October 2023.

The deadline for primary school applications is 15th January 2024.

Information for parents/carers of children in Y1-6 wishing to start at Staverton

For children wishing to join the school mid-year or at any point Y1-Y6, please see LA guidance ‘Apply for an In Year Transfer’.

Please note that Staverton CE Primary School belongs to a collaboration of twenty two local schools who are committed to working together promoting the very best outcomes for all children.  We believe that if not managed well moving schools can have a detrimental effect on childrens learning.

If your request for an In-Year Transfer is not because of an address change or relocation from overseas, we would expect that you would have discussed the reasons for the proposed move with your current school prior to making any contact with us.

If having considered the above, along with all of the points listed within the LA guidance ‘Apply for an In Year Transfer’ you decide to proceed you must complete and return this document as instructed.  Please note that in order to ensure the transfer is the most successful it can be it is essential, and a requirement of our school, that the form is completed fully.

Prior to any transfer being agreed we will contact the Headteacher of your child’s/children’s current and previous schools.

Thank you for thinking about Staverton CE Primary School as a possible placement for your child.  We look forward to hearing from you.

A guide to those first days in the Reception class

Parents and School- a partnership As parents you have done a tremendous job of teaching your child before they start school. Children learn more in the years before they start school than at any other period in their lives. We need you to help us give your child the best possible start to their education, so if you have any concerns about your child and school, or if there is anything that you feel might help us get to know your child better, please let us know.

Your child’s teacher will be happy to talk to you at the end of the day if you have any queries; first thing in the morning can be a bit hectic. There will be a chance to have a meeting with your child’s teacher once your child has had a chance to settle in school, after about 3 weeks.

Thank you for letting us care for your child. If you want to find out anything else about school, please phone or call in or explore the website further.

Induction Arrangements

Since September 2011 parents can now choose for their child to commence full days at the start of the school year regardless of their birth month.

The School Day
You may bring your child to school from 8.35am and take them to their classroom through the playground door. School starts at 8:45am.  Once inside the room your child should hang up their coat and put their book bag in the tray. Once inside the room there will be activities out for your child to go to.

The children will prepare their own snack (government-provided fruit or vegetable) as part of their work programme and they will eat their snack and have a drink of milk or water before going out to play at 10.40am.

Lunch is at 12.15pm for KS1 and KS2. The children will go to the hall together and may sit with a friend from their class, regardless of whether they bring a packed lunch or are having a school meal. After lunch the children will have a playtime before afternoon lessons start.

School ends at 3.15pm. Please wait for your child in the playground outside the classroom. The playground is very busy at the end of the day and we hand over the children one by one. Please be patient, we do not want to lose any children. If you have arranged for someone else to collect your child please let the teacher know – a phone call to the office is fine if arrangements change during the day.

Your child will need

  • A bag for putting a reading book in.
  • Daps, shorts (blue if possible) P.E. shirt (blue or white) socks, joggers for the cold weather.
  • School uniform – blue sweatshirt, jumper or cardigan, blue or white polo shirt (much easier than proper shirts and blouses) grey trousers or skirt, white or grey socks.

If you wish your child to bring packed lunches, the school policy is that sweets, glass bottles or fizzy drinks are not allowed, thank you.

PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT EVERYTHING IS LABELLED WITH YOUR CHILD’S NAME.
