World Book Day 2020

In PSHE this week we worked on facing challenges and working together. In groups the children had to make the tallest tower that could stand by itself for 20 seconds. They had only spaghetti and 10 marshmallows to work with. The children identified that the hardest part was making the tower stand. Afterwards we concluded that we should never give up and always try our best no matter how hard a task is - well done Bears!

We were so lucky to have a visit from the author and illustrator M.P. Robertson. He inspired the children during his dragon drawing session, teaching them how to draw dragons - look at Bears' amazing sketches!

We have just started our first topic in science. We had a great afternoon exploring different everyday objects and identifying what materials they are made from.

Term 4

Welcome back, I hope you have all had a lovely half term. We have another busy and exciting term planned.

In Literacy, we are starting our new book - Meerkat Mail. We will be looking at writing letters and information texts. Reception children will also be looking at retelling the story.

In Maths, Year 1 will be continuing with place value for numbers up to 50 and Reception with number bonds to 10. We will then be moving on to measurement.

We are beginning our new topic in Science which is all about everyday materials - we have lots of investigations planned!

Keep checking the class page for knowledge organisers and homework. Updates and photographs of the children's learning will also be on this page and on Tapestry for Reception parents.  Any questions, please do not hesitate to ask smiley

We celebrated International Book Giving Day by visiting the school's book swap. Thank you for all your donations!

Amazing homework on the Great Fire of London!

We have been writing diary entries as the baker on the first day of the Great Fire of London. Fabulous writing Bears!

We have started our new topic exploring collage. In the style of Andy Goldsworthy, we looked at natural collage. We went outside and created pictures out of natural objects. Here are some of our fantastic creations!

Last week, Bears were lucky to visit the prayer spaces provided by the 'Open the Book' team. It was a chance for the children to think and reflect in a calm environment. They wrote prayers for those in need, sorry prayers, prayers for their family and loved ones and also asked lots of questions about God. For example, 'What is it like in heaven?'. Bears, you were brilliant!

We have loved learning all about the Great Fire of London so far! The children have even had the chance to dress up as Samuel Pepys - the famous eyewitness during the tragedy.

Term 3

Welcome back, I hope you have all had a lovely Christmas and are ready for an exciting term.

We will be starting our new book 'Vlad and the Great Fire of London' where we will be writing recounts and diary entries from the perspectives of different characters. Reception children will also be writing character descriptions and looking at the structure of stories.

In maths we will be beginning with place value for numbers up to 20 for Y1, and up to 10 for Reception.

Our first topic is History where we will be learning all about the Great Fire of London which will also help us to understand our class book.

Keep checking our class page for updates on our learning, spellings, knowledge organisers and homework. Reception parents, don't forget to look at Tapestry to see what the children have been learning. smiley

DT - We made our own moving books for the Christmas Story!

Bears, I have been so impressed with your beautiful decorations for our Christmas tree!

We are currently learning about instructions in our non-fiction literacy unit. We had to carefully follow a set of instructions for how to make a jam sandwich - we enjoyed eating it at the end!

We have been learning all about maps in Geography. This week we learned about the points of a compass. We made our own compasses and had a go at using them around the classroom!

Term 2

Welcome back! I hope you have all had a lovely half term break and are ready for Term 2. We will be starting our new book Dogger looking at character and setting descriptions to help us with story writing. We will also be learning how to write instructions. In maths we are beginning with subtraction. Our first topic this term is Geography where we will be looking at maps and how they are useful. Homework, spellings and knowledge organisers have been updated and added to the relevant pages above.

Keep checking our class page and Tapestry (for Reception parents) for updates! smiley

We enjoyed learning all about Hinduism on our RE Day. We learned all about the story of Rama and Sita and how light is celebrated during Diwali. We then made our own Rangoli patterns using rice!

We have been learning about animals in Science. Little Zoo visited us and brought an armadillo, chinchilla, tarantula, hedgehog and barn owl for us to see. We were all so brave - even Miss Butterfield and Mrs Donaldson touched the tarantula!

We have been writing our own book reviews for 'Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain'. Amazing writing Bears!

Our Reception children met a policeman today and learned all about what he does on a daily basis.

We have been investigating our senses in Science!

We have been looking at Handa's Hen - our Reception children have been ordering the story together!

We loved tasting all the fruits from Handa's Surprise!
