Harvest Mice

Welcome to Harvest Mice Class

Foundation Stage and Year 1

Term 5

Our topic for this term is

Was Christopher Columbus a pirate?

This term we will be learning about some explorers and their exciting journeys. We will also be making an exciting film trailer. Watch this space!

We love our pirate ship role play area!

Term 5

Our topic for this term is

Do all heroes have superpowers?

As part of this topic we will be looking at heroes from history such as Florence Nightingale and Neil Armstrong. We will also discuss who the everyday heroes are that keep us safe. In Art and Design, we will be designing and making our own superhero outfits.

Our story we are learning in Literacy is:

Eliot came to visit us! We enjoyed asking him questions all about his secret life as a super hero.

We thought about what it would be like if we were secret super heroes. We each thought of a super power we would like to have and then we designed and made our own super hero masks.

As part of Design Technology, we designed our own super hero capes. We thought carefully about our superhero names and what power we may have and used these ideas to design our capes. Then we used our plans to make them!

Here are some of the finished product-

Meet the superheroes in Harvest Mice! I wonder if you can spot our secret identities

Term 4

Our topic for this term is:

'What happens down on the farm?'

Within this topic we will be exploring what animals can be found on the farm and what products come from these animals. We will also investigate how farms have changed over the years and different types of farms.

Our story we are learning in Literacy is:

       The Little Red Hen

On Wednesday, as an introduction to our story and our topic this term we made bread. We had a recipe to follow and really enjoyed having to rolls and kneed the bread.

In English we took it in turns to play the role of the Little Red Hen. One of us was an interviewer asking questions to the Little Red Hen. Here is one of the videos made by Year 1.

As part of our topic we are looking at maps and how they are set out. We have been learning four points of the compass- North, South, East and West.

We were very excited to hear that a farmer had asked us to look after some of his eggs for the morning. We got together with Sparrows and we were given the task of building a nest. We had to make sure our nest would keep the eggs warm and safe.

We have also been busy making different farm animals in art. We used a range of materials including feathers, paint, card and cotton wool. All of our animals can be seen on our topic display in the classroom.

Term 3

Our topic for this term is:

Do we have the same toys as our grandparents did when they were young?

Over the course of this term we will be looking at toys throughout the ages. We will start by looking at toys we have, moving backwards through generations and we will even get a chance to look at some Victorian toys!

In science we will be investigating our amazing bodies. We will explore our senses, how to keep healthy and name parts of the body.

Watch this space as we have many exciting things coming up this term!

Wow! what an exciting first week we have had in Harvest Mice! The Three Bear's left their porridge in our classroom and whilst we were outside someone ate all of Baby Bear's porridge! We thought Baby Bear would be sad so we made him some more. The bear's must have enjoyed this as the next morning all the porridge was gone!

We were very lucky to have some grandparents come in to show us some of their favourite toys.

Before they arrived we discussed some things we would like to find out.

Isla's Grandad showed us some of his planes and cars that he would make and paint. He said he used to hang them from his ceiling or pretend he was flying them.

Harry's Nanny showed us her teddy. She told us how she was given it to her by her Grandad when she was a baby.

Rocci's Nanny also came to show us her favourite game. She told us that she did not have brothers or sisters so she played games for one person. She showed us how to play Jacks.

We have some great displays and toys to play with linked to our topic of old toys.

We have some lovely new visitors in our role play corner...

In maths we have been working on Place Value. We have been exploring numbers and how to separate them into tens and ones. We have had fun playing around with the diennes to demonstrate this. We have become very good at this!

We read the story of Goldilock and the three bears and had some fun exploring the characters and acting out some of the story.

Can you guess which characters we are?

To start our Science topic 'Our amazing bodies' we labelled as many body parts as we could.

We did this as a class.

And during explore time we added our own labels too.

We had a fantastic time visiting the Assembly Rooms to see the Toy exhibition. We had a look at some old toys and we discussed what we thought they might be made out of. We then got to play with some of the toys.

Term 2

In term 2 we will be investigating the question:

Where do leaves go in winter?

We will be investigating plants and seasonal changes in our Topic. We will compare the weather here in England to the weather in Bermuda.

What a fantastic time we had on our Fairy tale day! Have a look at some of the activities we were doing throughout the day...

Some of us wrote emails to our favourite fairy tale characters.

We also made crowns so we could all be princes and princesses.

Using playdough we also made gingerbread men.

We also made potions for different spells. Some of us even tested them out by drinking them!

We really enjoyed reading different fairy tales together throughout the day

Year 1 have written some fantastic poems about Autumn.

Look at our wonderful Autumn homework! We made some pictures using leaves and some firework pictures too!

We really enjoyed visiting Foxes class and reading a variety of stories together. We talked about the books and what we liked and disliked about them too.

In Maths this week we have really enjoyed learning all about 3D shapes! One of our challenges was to make shapes using play dough.

As part of our topic we have been looking at seasons. This week we went for a walk around the school play ground to see what signs of autumn we could find. We saw so many colourful leaves and we even found some seeds that have fallen from plants and trees.

To commemorate Remembrance Day we painted poppies. We discussed what remembrance day was all about and shared a prayer together. We used our poppies to decorate the prayer.

Look what a fabulous time we had playing with the bikes working on communication and teamwork.

Term 1

In term 1 we will be answering the question:

What should the three little pigs have used to build their house?

We will be investigating different materials as well as explore different parts of the world to look at some famous buildings and structures.

We have been learning the story of the three little pigs. We created a story map as a class the help us.

Can you use the story map to retell the story of the three little pigs?

We have really enjoyed reading The Three Little Pigs. We have looked at lots of different versions of the story and we have loved reading, looking at the pictures and telling the story.

We have also used the listening station to listen to different versions of the story.

In our pop up theatre we put on puppet shows using the characters in the story.

To celebrate Harvest we had great fun dressing up in bright colours and making a very long paper chain. Our challenge was to make chains of 5 and 10 by carefully counting the links in the chain.

Look how long it was when we put it all together!

In Topic we have been looking at different famous buildings around the world.

Can you guess which buildings these are?

Clue: This can be found in Australia.
