School governors
The governing body
Our role is to ensure every child receives the very best education we can provide – the best possible outcome for every child is our ultimate goal. We're not involved in the school's day-to-day operation. Instead, we set the criteria by which the school is managed, and both support and challenge the Headteacher and senior staff to ensure the school performs as well as it should, and that every pupil has the best opportunity to learn and develop.
Governor activity
We meet as a full governing body each term. Alongside these meetings, we monitor progress against the School Development Plan and build strong links with subject leaders through regular visits to the school.
We also fulfil our statutory obligations, overseeing safeguarding and special educational needs provision, monitoring attendance, the Early Years Foundation Stage, Health and Safety, and the school's financial position, including public funds paid through the Pupil and Sports Premiums. Governors also monitor suspensions, complaints and any incidents of whistleblowing.
Our governing body is active and supportive of school life, spending time within the school day to understand how the school runs and to build relationships with staff and children. Minutes of governors' meetings are available on request from the school.
The governing body
Our governing body is made up of 5 parent governors (elected by their peers), 2 foundation governors (appointed by the Diocese), 1 local authority governor, 2 staff governors and 6 co-opted governors (appointed by the governing body). It's a voluntary role, and one that plays a vital part in the life of a successful school. The normal term of office is four years. After that, any governor who wishes to continue can stand for a further term, and – provided no one else has come forward for the position – will typically be re-elected or reconfirmed in their role.
We recognise and appreciate that governors bring different areas of expertise to the governing body.
Who sits on our governing body
Foundation governors
Appointed by the Diocesan Board of Education to secure the school's religious character, and to ensure that character is preserved and developed.
Parent governors
Any parent or primary carer of a pupil at the school can stand for election when a parent governor position becomes vacant. If more than one parent expresses interest, an election is held in which all parents can vote. Parent governors don't formally represent parents on the governing body, but act as a link between parents and governors, keeping in touch with parents' views.
Co-opted governors
Appointed by the governing body for having skills judged to contribute to effective governance and the school's success.
Staff governors
A member of school staff, elected by their fellow staff.
Local authority governors
Appointed by the local education authority.
