Our approach
Respecting every belief
RE is relevant for every child, whatever their religion or beliefs. At Staverton, we value each child, acknowledge that everyone holds their own point of view, and accept them for who they are. We want children to leave Staverton holding that same respect for other faiths – understanding how religion shapes individuals, families, communities and cultures, and exploring the political and social impact of religion alongside questions of justice, truth and the meaning of life.
Understanding Christianity
We teach RE in a blocked unit of 5–6 lessons, with one unit each term. Roughly half of our units focus on Christianity, taught through the Understanding Christianity scheme, which explores key themes from the Bible's story – Creation, People of God, Incarnation, Gospel, Salvation, and Kingdom of God. Each unit starts with the text and key story, moves on to its impact on Christian lives today, then invites children to reflect on their own views in light of it.
Exploring other faiths
Our remaining units explore other world views, giving children a broad understanding of different faiths. In KS1, this focuses on Islam and Judaism; in KS2, units also cover Sikhism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Humanism (including agnostic and atheist world views). These are taught through The Emmanuel Project, using an enquiry cycle: Engaging, Enquiring, Exploring (the key text, community practice, and how it's lived out), Evaluating, and Expressing their own understanding.
