At Staverton, we want every child to become a confident, accurate and effective writer who can communicate their ideas clearly and creatively.
Our approach
Children need strong foundations before they can become successful writers. In our youngest children, we emphasise phonics, spelling and handwriting, alongside opportunities to write about exciting, high-quality stories and texts.
In EYFS, Drawing Club sparks children’s imagination through engaging stories and characters. In Key Stage 1, children gradually build their spelling, handwriting, grammar and punctuation while beginning to write for different purposes. In Key Stage 2, a carefully sequenced programme has them writing to entertain, inform, persuade and instruct.
Throughout the school, children explore high-quality texts before creating their own writing, and use story maps to understand how a narrative works before making their own versions.
Developing confident writers
Good writing is a process, so children plan, write, review, edit and improve their work. Spelling, grammar and punctuation are taught explicitly, then practised within their writing. Teachers model writing and the choices writers make, and feedback from adults helps children become independent in spotting what they’ve done well and what to improve.
Supporting every child
We believe that every child can become a successful writer. All children receive high-quality teaching, with extra support where it’s needed, such as more practice with spelling, handwriting, vocabulary or other foundational skills. We carefully monitor progress so support can be tailored to each child’s needs.
Writing across the curriculum
Writing isn’t just something we do in English lessons. Children use their writing skills across the curriculum to record their learning, explain their ideas and communicate what they know. Our aim is for children to leave Staverton able to write accurately, confidently and creatively, with the skills they need to succeed in secondary school and beyond.
