Music

Within Music, we develop children's understanding and experience of music, with the aim of inspiring their curiosity about musical expression and creativity.

Our approach

A framework for musical understanding

‍Musical knowledge, understanding and skills give children the framework to explore the many dimensions of music.

Building on musical history

‍Teachers use BBC Ten Pieces as the basis for developing children's understanding of musical history, knowledge and skills.

‍

Visiting musicians

‍Each year, the school welcomes musicians to perform for the children – sharing their journey into music and teaching about their instrument.

Whole-class instrument lessons

‍All children in Key Stage 2 have whole-class instrument lessons as part of their curriculum music: recorder or glockenspiel in Years 3 and 4, and ukulele in Years 5 and 6.

Weekly music assembly

‍All children attend a weekly music assembly, listening attentively to a piece chosen from the Model Music Curriculum's suggested list. They're taught a variety of songs, both for performance at school events and simply for the joy of singing.

Music in school Life

Music at Staverton isn't confined to the classroom. All children have the opportunity to perform during our Harvest Service, Christmas Carol Service, and leavers' performances – sharing their music in school, and at local care homes and churches. We invite parents, carers, and members of our wider school community to join us.
