In Robins, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, providing an exciting and enabling environment where children are encouraged to explore, discover and learn through play. We love sharing stories, spending time outdoors in all weathers and learning through a balance of child-initiated play and carefully planned adult-led experiences. Our aim is to nurture happy, confident and curious learners who are excited to come to school each day.

Communication and Language

In Communication and Language, we will be using our role play and small-world resources to imagine and recreate roles from real-life family situations and our favourite stories. We will get to know our new friends by asking and answering questions, and build our understanding of the books we read together, including retelling familiar stories.

Expressive Arts and Design

In Expressive Arts and Design, we will be learning to use the materials and resources in our craft area, decorating our own birds to put on the school tree, and drawing ourselves using a mirror and our families from memory. We will also explore different musical instruments in our classroom and learn new songs to support our learning.

Literacy

In Literacy, our Read Write Inc phonics sessions will cover our stop signals, Fred Talk games, blending, Set 1 single sounds for reading and writing, and spelling with Fred Fingers. In Talk Through Stories, we will read Owl Babies, Elmer, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, Love, Hugless Douglas, Max and the Tag-Along Moon and Small’s Big Dream.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we will be following Mastering Number to build our understanding of numbers and numerical patterns, as well as learning to use our class visual timetable and recognise key times of the day. We will use positional language to describe where things are in our classroom, match and sort objects, compare size, mass and capacity, and complete simple AB repeating patterns.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

In Personal, Social and Emotional Development, we will be talking about the similarities and differences between us, and naming the special people in our lives. We will learn how to work well together as a class, use kind hands, and understand our rights and how to keep ourselves safe at school.

Physical Development

In Physical Development, we will be exploring the equipment in our outdoor area, including balls, balance beams and skipping ropes, and learning to dress and undress ourselves. We will build our fine motor skills each week through playdough gym, pom poms, tweezers, threading, and picking up small objects like Cheerios and spaghetti with our fingers. In PE, we will be learning to stand on one leg, work on simple tasks independently, and follow instructions safely.

Understanding the World

In Understanding the World, we will be describing ourselves using words like tall and short, and talking about our families while recognising the similarities and differences between us and others. We will learn about our five senses, explore Space, including how to get there and the first Moon landing, find out what Harvest Festival is, and observe the changes that happen during autumn. In RE, we will be learning about special people, including Jesus.

Phonics at Staverton

We teach phonics using Read Write Inc, a systematic, synthetic programme. In EYFS, Year 1 and into Year 2, daily reading sessions are based around the Read, Write Inc programme. Sessions begin short – around 10 to 15 minutes – and build up gradually to 45 to 50 minutes as children progress.

This promotes pupils' phonics knowledge and decoding at word level, developing reading fluency, and using the alphabetic code to encode for spelling. Children engage in reading a variety of Read Write Inc phonic books matched to the progression on a one-to-one basis. Comprehension and reading for pleasure are developed through reading a whole-class book on a daily basis.

Through this, children learn to:

  • Decode letter-sound correspondences quickly and effortlessly, using their phonic knowledge and skills
  • Read common exception words on sight
  • Understand what they read
  • Read aloud with fluency and expression
  • Write confidently, with a strong focus on vocabulary and grammar
  • Spell quickly and easily by segmenting the sounds in words
  • Acquire good handwriting

Once children complete the Read Write Inc Phonics programme, they are taught reading through whole-class guided reading sessions. As part of guided reading, children are also taught spelling using the Read Write Inc Spelling programme.

Targeted academic support

We use Read Write Inc to regularly assess children's progress in phonics. Sometimes it's necessary to provide extra support for children with word reading. For this, we use 1:1 tutoring to ensure all children are able to read fluently using recall of their phonic knowledge. Teachers ensure that children at risk of underachievement have daily one-to-one reading, which is carefully tracked.
